Abstract
The Internet has revolutionised the healthcare system in searching and sharing information. It has
made it easier for medical personnel and other relevant stakeholders to carry out their professional
activities. Despite countless benefits using internet services presents, there are also challenges that
come with it. This study examined the benefits and challenges of using internet services for
professional purposes by medical personnel at Abuja general hospitals. The research employed
mixed methods approach using survey and interview as research methods. A sample size of 322
out of the total population of 2056 was used. Based on the results, the benefits derived while using
internet services for professional purposes have been acknowledged as 36.3% of the respondents
indicated easy access to patients’ information and being updated on health information as benefits.
This position is supported by the qualitative data which shows that majority of the respondents
derive same benefits. Also, 73.3% of the respondents indicated “internet access” as a major
challenge faced while using the internet for professional purposes which is also affirmed by the
qualitative data. The study concludes that the medical personnel at Abuja general hospitals benefit
a lot from using internet despite the challeges associated with it. The study recommends that
hospitals should be provided with adequate internet facilities and maintenance protocols by
relevant stakeholders, sponsors and government for effective work flow and communication.
