Abstract

This study examines Port Harcourt residents’ perception of news credibility on eyewitness reports in Nigeria Info, Wazobia FM, and Today FM radio stations. Some of the objectives were to find out the perceived level of audience reliance on eyewitness report; investigate residents’ perception of news credibility on an eyewitness report in each of the radio stations. This research is premised on individual differences and perception theories. The study adopted the survey design. A sample size of 384 respondents was drawn from the current population and projected figures of Port Harcourt (1,376, 250) in 2024. The multi-stage sampling technique was adopted. Data were collected with a structured questionnaire for respondents and with guide for Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Data were presented in tables while analyses were made in simple percentages and weighted mean scores (WMS), based on a 4-point modified Likert Scale. Findings revealed that respondents listened to eyewitness reports regularly; their level of reliance on the programme was high; also they expressed positive perception on the news credibility of eyewitness reports on the three radio stations. It was recommended among others, that eyewitness programme be sustained to encourage more citizens’ participation in news reporting.
